Related questions

Good to know.

What fuels is it rated for?

Gasoline, diesel, and kerosene. The interior carries a fuel-resistant internal coating. The color convention: red for gasoline, yellow for diesel, blue for kerosene — same steel underneath.

Is this legal in California and other CARB states?

Yes — in Red, Yellow, and Blue. Wavian jerry cans ship with a spout system that meets the CARB (California Air Resources Board) and EPA Portable Fuel Container standards, which makes them legal for sale, transport, and refueling in all 50 states. The certification covers the can and spout together — that's the assembly you receive.

Color note for California. CARB reserves three colors for consumer portable fuel containers: Red for gasoline, Yellow for diesel, Blue for kerosene. Black and Olive Drab have no assigned fuel designation, so those two colors are not permitted for sale or fuel use in California. Outside California they're identical to the certified colors — same steel, same fully welded recessed seams, same NATO spout — but if you are in CA, choose Red, Yellow, or Blue.

Federal rule: 40 CFR 59 Subpart F. California rule: 17 CCR §§ 94500–94517 (color code in CARB certification procedure CP-501 §2.2).

Does it come with a spout?

Yes. Every Wavian fuel can includes a CARB-compliant spout with a breather tube for smooth, glug-free pouring.

What makes it different from cheap look-alikes?

The seams. Wavian seams are fully welded and recessed into the body — knockoff cans pinch and crimp their steel, and that fold is exactly where they split and leak. Add 0.9 mm cold-rolled steel, a bayonet closure with locking pin, and the same factory in Latvia since 1937.

20L or 10L — which one?

The 20L (5.28 gal) is the NATO standard — roughly 40 lb when full. The 10L (2.64 gal) carries half as much at half the weight and fits where the 20L won't. Same steel, same seal, same spout.

Is an empty jerry can hazmat to ship?

No. Factory-new, never-fueled cans are vapor-free and exempt from DOT hazardous-materials rules (49 CFR 173.29(b)). Your can ships standard ground — no hazmat surcharge, no special carrier.
